I know how you feel.I am a minority in a terribly narrow minded country where i can`t even get a credit card.If someone says "Speak Japanese" to me I say, "Why?Do you want to join the conversation?".If they answer no I tell them to eff off.

Nationalism, National Pride, Patriotism. They are all ridiculous concepts used to control and manipulate people. They are all just a step or two shy of racism.

Why should you feel so strongly about a bit of ground your past relatives invaded or moved to and you were born on?

A country is like a family. All good families have some pride in themselves. However, some families are welcoming of new members, some aren't. Just think when someone marries into a family - there's always some dickhead who decides they don't like them, but the family as a whole can be all "they're not good enough for us!" or "welcome! now you're one of us!"

Pride doesn't have to become arrogance, and a family or country can be inclusive or exclusive.

I prefer inclusive families, and want my country to inclusive, too. There's a reason my wife and I chose to live in the southeastern suburbs, with Jews, Greeks, Indians, Sri Lankans, Sudanese, Maori, Vietnamese, Chinese, and so on. We like that.

I wouldn't want to live in a country where everyone is the same. That's like those families where the elders are so suspicious of everyone outside the family they get the cousins to marry, and would get the brothers and sisters to marry, too, if they could.

Unless you're Aboriginal, we're all migrants to this country. We are all "New Australians."

Now comes my crusty old bloke and conservative moment: as a soldier, I had to be prepared to put my life on the line for my country, for people who were strangers and had different coloured skin, different language and faith and culture. I did not swear an oath to protect some drunken bogan's right to abuse someone with darker skin than him. It was an oath to protect out Commonwealth, our common well-being and community. "Commonwealth" comes not from "wealth" in the sense of money, but "weal" - the good. Our commonwealth is our common good.

You will notice that the drunken abusers of people speaking other languages do not have a history of service to their country, of contributing to the common good. They have not served in the armed forces, the police, ambulance, carers for elderly or disabled. They are not Scout leaders or organisers of bake sales to fix the church roof, nor are they teachers, still less are they dedicated parents to their children, if any. They are drunken bums who never even apply for jobs so they could at least pay some taxes. They contribute nothing to our common wealth and well-being.

So to hell with them.
