On the GC there was a lady sitting on a bench when a bogun walks past and says,

This is purely semantics.

You're a dick is a Colloquialism, in that context it has a definition of being an idiot or an annoying person - an insult.

Nationalism has no colloquial meaning.

Yes. What do you expect but semantics when you bring out the dictionary?

Let's put away the dictionary and use our common sense. A country like a family can have pride or not, and be inclusive or exclusive. The two are separate things.

Japan, for example, has relatively little nationalism, but is quite exclusive - I knew a woman who was born in Japan, her parents were born in Japan, but her grandparents weren't, they were born in Korea, she had to carry an "alien card", couldn't be a citizen.

The US has craploads of nationalism, but is very multicultural, and accepts people from every country on the planet.

Nationalism, however, is not pride. Pride and exclusiveness are different things.

And as Dancelot said, the exclusive ones usually turn out to be morons.

Yes mate. Metaphors should be something everyone can relate to, and everyone has known welcoming and unwelcoming families, even if they've only known their own country.

Yes purely semantics.But my point is,colloquialism,nuances, or otherwise, words have more than one meaning.

interesting thread here. Is saying 'racism is alive in Australia' slightly racist in itself?

Australia is a super diverse country. Diversity with religion, race, beliefs, values, languages, et al. That's not a problem. That's an opportunity.

Be very careful when it comes to metaphors. If your metaphor was that your a lion, 'big, strong, fast & powerful', it also means that your ruthless, cunning & take no hostages!!

I was called "un-Australian" this week in a heated debate on an online forum... isn't that somewhat un-Australian?

Actually I'm really glad that we are having a reasonably constructive discussion here, because racism can be one of those topics that get people hot under the collar. This is definitely something that doesn't often get brought up at the family BBQ!
