Do gyms make much money?

Well my gym must be doing it off drinks.

$3.50 for a 600ml of Gatorade. Go to Coles and you can get a 1 litre gatorade for $3. Or just the powder to make your own for $10 for 8 litres.

I often think about this question myself but I just can`t see the money there.
A lot of people take their own drinks and don`t seem to spend a lot at the counter.
I`ve been doing my own research on setting up a place but the costs so far seem to outweigh the incomings, and I am thinking on a small scale.
Any gym owners/managers/workers out there?

The only thing I can think of is they sell lots of memberships but people dont use the gym. But you are right I dont see many people buying the consumables. Id love to open a gym to. I know im a lard ass but think its important to do something you have an interest in, even if your not good at it.

I'd say that most of the independent or smaller gyms would be doing it for their own passion only, can't see much money being made.
Especially for the bodybuilding type gyms with no frills.

Then there are the Fitness First type gyms which are kind of like a Ponzi scheme, keep turning over new clients for cashflow to keep operating.
One day their clients will wake up and realise there are better options.

Worked in gyms. There is no money to be made. Regulars cost you money. Insurance and other overheads are insane (have any idea how much electricity and water those places use?) Big chains make their money by selling advertising space, renting out areas to massage therapists etc, off PT rents and they get a better deal leasing their equptment because of their size.

fitness first business idea sounds like a good plan charging PT to work there , why should a PT get free rent , think of fitness first as being a supermarket you own a product that you want to demo to potential customers do you think the supermarket would allow you to walk in and set up your booth free of charge
