My perceptions of public sector jobs so please correct me if I`m wrong.

Guaranteed salary.In these times that is a bonus in itself.
Job for life.
Good,no, great long service leave.
You can leave your job for an adventure and walk back into it within 2-3 years (it used to be like that).
Good retirement benefits.
Work hard and take all the crap from overpaid underworked incompetent bureaucrats and you can become one of those overpaid underworked incompetent bureaucrats too.

yeah pretty accurate, stable job, great long service leave, and yes you can go on unpaid leave for 12 months then come back to your position.
15% super.
im in a more technical/specialist area so i dont need to put up with these incompetent beauraucrats you speak off but im sure there out there.

All those bonuses may have been true for the generations before me. Now everyone is a contractor if you dont believe me then you are fooling yourself or in some department that has not yet been hit by the latest trend to replace civil servants with contractors. In my directorate under 10% are civil servants and most of them are old everyone else is a contractor.

kindred you msut of been in a wierd spot.

where i am in public service i can leave for 12 months and then come back to job. i have an on-going position. job not 100% guarenteed but the contractors will go before i do.
