I hate my job and was thinking of joining the military but wanted some peoples views. Is it as bad as public service? As in full of arseholes that dont follow their own rules. I want to work somewhere that its all about what you know not how popular you are. Also is it bad as far as violence against your own? As in i dont wanna get into a fight with a fellow service man cause i think people that fight their own are retarded.

The military is another government department.
However, like other government departments, there are different levels within it. There's a difference between being the labourer on the road and being the road engineer in the office. And there's a difference between between a common soldier, sailor or airman, and being an officer... in an office. |

So really its no better just the same but you cant leave once you join. I dont know how people work in public service and not go on killing sprees seriously its just wrong.

Well mate it depends what sort of work you want to do within the Military, Firstly you need to choose where you would like to go Air, Army, Navy then choose a profession within. There are also Officer Applications and recognition of prior learning. What would YOU like to achieve or do in the ADF?

I was thinking of joining for the same reason due to asshole at work (its on about page 48 or 49 of the venting thread) and the fact that Im sick of everything being so routine like at school. Get up, get dressed, do your same thing in the same place everyday, thats good for learning/training but I want some adventure and some risk. The pay don't look that great, but service overseas is where the money is. $10k per month in Iraq and $12k per month Afganistan according to the guy I know who has done a few tours in both countries - however Afganistan is far more dangerous for Aussies due to the part of the country our forces have been assigned. He was good friends with that guy from darwin who took a bullet in the head from a Taliban millitant and was there when it happened. Do it long enough and security contracting is on the cards too. PMC's pay very well ($US 650 per day but its a much more dangerous and unethical work choice. Look up "security contracting" up if you want to know more - however the ADF strongy advises against it as your not covered by the geneva convention and get no chance of rescue or humane treatment as a mercenary)
Another thing you have to concider is that when you leave the ADF, will the job you have been trained to do provide you with some sort of benefit in terms of employment in civillian life again? They offer trades but I dont know how well they are accepted by potential employers when you leave. Im asking myself these things and have the defence jobs site in my fav's list. There are also army reserves "trials" (not the gap year) where you train with them for only a weekend to get a taste of what is like and Im concidering doing that myself. Here is a copy and paste from their site: If you're still not positive about joining, enquire about one of our trial training weekends away with the Army Reserve, offered by various regional units. Obviously you won't be doing everything a qualified soldier would do, but you will receive an introduction to Army training in both a tactical and non-tactical environment. This will include camping out in hootchies, eating from ration packs, an introduction to field craft, observing qualified troops in training, and an introduction shoot on an assault rifle in an Army Weapons Training Simulation System. And if at the end of the weekend, you feel the Army Reserve is not for you, you're under absolutely no obligation to continue. To find out more contact your local Army Reserve Unit (White Pages under Defence). Hope this helps. If you go through with it PM me or just post how it goes as its something I'm seriously looking into myself.

i applied for the army and had my YOU session which is a private interview to see what options you have and what u can apply for but i cancelled it the day before because i got a job with Queensland Rail and its so so so good that havent looked back so i would say to u go to the defence force website and apply for a YOU session and even see what u can apply for online. I got a mate who just left for the army and he called me a week later saying he was having a great time mind u he is a champion martial artist and a champion shooter so i can see him going far quick. just think about what u really want before u charge in and sign a contract.
