Default Osgood-Schlatter disease/syndrome

does anyone know of anyone that has/had Osgood-Schlatter disease?
How did they deal with it ?My Gf's kid who is 6ft at age 14 just got diagnosed with it. He started complaining about a bump under his knee being sore , after inspection the bump didn't look right so head off to the docs and got told it was Osgood-Schlatter disease/syndrome. Which means no sport or atleast sport that involves running or jumping

The doctor we saw was crap , told us to read up about it on the net . so after some reading need to strengten the quadricep and hamstrings , but not alound to do too much bending to the knee

Never heard of it. Not life threatening is it?

nah not life threatening , Osgood-Schlatter (say: "oz-good shlot-ter") disease is one of the most common causes of knee pain in young athletes. It causes swelling, pain and tenderness just below the knee, over the shin bone (also called the tibia). Osgood-Schlatter commonly affects boys who are having a growth spurt during their pre-teen or teenage years. One or both knees may be affected.
this isn't his xray but it looks quite similar

I got it bad through growth spurts through my teens. My brother also gets it now. The doctor told me pressure bandages are all you can do. In heinsight huge doses of fishoil would have helped as it's heavan on the joints now. It does stop when you stop growing though..

I had it hardcore as a teen, was on pain killers for ages 14-16. I'm 23 this year, and whilst day to day pain is gone, god help me if somebody even breathes on it. Normal squating I can deal with, bit I'm in agony when I hit the 20 reppers.

That's a shame. What other sports can he play instead?

That sucks!A fourteen year old who can`t play sport ,especially a six footer who could be an incredible athlete.
As it is a bump is surgery to remove it an option?Sure it may lay him up for a year or two but it it were me it would be better than the alternative.
