I've been having arguments about this one with several people who're not comfortable with the way i eat. I don't know why they make my diet their business.. they have their own stupid lives to worry about. But anyway, i'd really like to get to the bottom of this, as it's bugging me. I'd like your opinion (Fadi, Markos and other ppl who've been lifting and eating high protein for decades).
I'm 72kg, at roughly 10% bodyfat. I'm eating roughly 270g of protein a day. I've been told that if I eat this much, it can be very detrimental to my health, where it will affect my liver and kidneys. I spoke to my doctor once in the past, who said protein in 'high'(didn't define high or extreme) amounts will cause increase in uric acid concentration, but this can be counteracted by drinking lots of water. I haven't seen any studies to suggest that high protein can damage kidney and liver. It's all the hear-say BS. So from your experience(s), are there any long term issues with high protein on the liver, stomach or kidney? Thanks,

Listen to your doctor not the people who do not know what they are talking about. More acid is the problem so alkalizing foods and water will help. Noobs and Fadi can go into it more for you.

Short version - have as much as you want, but you only need about half what you're having.
Your doctor said it's fine if you drink lots of water, follow your doctor's advice. In general, medical types tell us that it's fine so long as you have no existing kidney, gall bladder or liver problems, or other issues like gout. If you're already healthy, heaps of protein won't make you sick; if you're already sick, it'll destroy you. So say the docs. That said, 270g protein at 72kg bodyweight, probably 150g or more of it is turning into poo and being flushed away. The AIS recommends 1.4-1.8g/kg daily, and reckons the rest either turns to fat (if you are eating more than you expend) or poo. Conume about 500-1,000kcal daily more than you need to stay the same (like a litre or two of milk), and have (with your 72kg bodyweight) around 100-150g/day protein, total. And you can grow with that. The stories of needing more protein than that can usually be traced back to magazine articles, and other people with connections to supplement companies. I mean, if you want over 200g daily of protein unless you are a real hog you're going to have to have protein powder. The people who make money from selling protein powder say you have to have more, what a coincidence. Some others follow them, but you'll find these are people with no nutritional qualifications or medical knowledge beyond google.

The problem with protein is the envolvement of pancreatic enzymes that are also needed to "unmask" cancer cells in our body.. Along with the high urea build up acidifying the body.. There is a whole thread on alkaline/acid. Like fadi said its all about homeostasis... The closer we can keep to it and not force the body always try to keep balance will lead us better "wellbeing health" ect. But we are here to get strong and get big... There are risks in everything we do. I think with all the shit people consume these days whey protein and natural protein sources are the least of your concerns... As stated a sick person is different to a 20yo wanting to be strong or achieve in sports. Remember we all need to enjoy life... Fadi also hit the nail on the head, i remember he was consuming 16000 calories or so a day? Alot? Well not for him at the time... It is all relevent to YOU. That is all that matters in this world how something effects YOU! If dairy effects you and not jot blow then dont drink it... If you have problems and need to avoid certain food then do it.. If you dont then drink and eat away. Everything is rellivent to you and you alone.. There is no 1 size fits all for most things.. We try to balance / health/wellbeing/ food/ weightlifting so that we can not be 1 hit wonders... Trian for 5 years and give up sick deprived injured.. This is why you dont take 20 no doz before trianign everyday and squat 20 times a day, because you know your limits and you want to be around to do it for a long time.. The same can be said about anything. Having said that at this stage there is no relation between protein intake and kidney renal funciton in healthy people. However renal function is 1 side of the story and while having a high protein intake is fine you need to do other things to balance the scales.. This meat eggs 6 times a day rubbish is no good for anyone... Add a salad or vegies with everymeal. Im not saying a high protein intake is bad, i am saying that a high protein diet at the expense of other nutrient rich food is a bad idea. Every meal must have fruit, vegies or salad legumes beans or some crap we need fibre to get the food through... Quote:

great info guys.
After reading Fadi's and noobs' article, I guess I should be worrying more on balance rather than quantity. So it's all about reducing the acidity. I'll google foods which increase alkalinity. I remember Fadi mentioning Lebanese cucumbers.
