I have added Shotokan (JKA) and Yu Ki Do to my experience. I still wanna do boxing. Im afraid life has caught up with me. I wont have any time next year for any serious training in martial arts. I will probably go to the Yu Ki Do dojo occasionally. My work place is moving into the centre of Adelaide so maybe I can pick something up there after work or something who knows.

Style : zen do kai karate
Years Training :3
Competed :no, green belt
How you find it, it was a great intro to martial arts the insructor kept it interesting, and we constantly tried different styles and fighting situations.

Style : muai thai
Years Training : about a year, always did it as part of karate same place and instructors.
Competed :no
How you find it, love the big power kicks elbows etc, grappling is a pain in the neck lol
, but was good for something different, definetly the toughest martial arts i have tried.

Style : Hwa rang tae kwon do
Years Training :3
Competed once, and did a few display spars, got to red 3.
How you find it, I really enjoyed it as i was just doing it for fitness, and flexibility.

I havent trained for nearly 9 years, but would love to try mma now i know a few mates that do it one instructs. alas too unfit, to unflexable and too slow now...

Most of this is just from watching TV, but i think i would be interesting in an MMA style of fighting. Seems like it would be great for working out even harder, a good test of your strength, plus it seems very useful if you are out at night with an iphone or something. I think i have a high tolerance for blows to my head too, so that would work out better.

still, it would be interesting to see what other experiences people have with that.

I've trained in MMA. Its good fun, but despite being labeled as "no rules" there are plenty of threats from common assault or robbery that MMA does not take into account. If somebody wants to fights you, they're looking for someone they can beat and tell their friends about. So expect somebody bigger than you. No weight divisions for drunken assualts. Robberies are statisticly proven to be more common with groups of 2-3 attackers rather than 1. So if you want to keep your iphone, you gotta drop em hard and fast, no combos, no submissions (wrestling on the ground is a bad idea when your dealing with a group) Also, you may have a hard head and strong neck muscles to stop it being flung around from punches, but a bottle will still cut your face up pretty bad.

Unfortunalty most schools do not teach effective self defence for the most likely attacks in this current day. Even my own - however I admit it. What I did to learn about it was train in RBSD (Reality Based Self Defence) in a few places to learn a few things.
This was the best one: Todd Group - Specialist Close Combat Systems - CQB, CQC, Unarmed Combat
Unfortunatly Im too busy to go to NZ to learn from tank himself (phase one seminar coming up in march, I want to go!) however I did a few sessions with a few of the guys who did when I was doing my security course. Great stuff!

Yeah. i know its "wrong" to learn a martial arts that is basically based on taking down a group of people as fast as possible (as you can use it for "evil" means). but it really would be helpful. I've been in an assault from 12 people though and any martial arts that would help you "win" in that situation would be very helpful in at least raising my self esteem and "feel of safety". As you know that providing you are bigger than them (they are usually younger gangs anyway), you can still win and so you feel safer.

I suppose its just fantasy to assume its possible though, after watching so many steven segal type movies, lol.

Hi Guys,

Did Judo for about 6 months and liked it. But my personal favourite is TKD...

Style: TaeKwonDo
Years Trained: 15. 2nd Dan
Competed: Yes
Like it: Yes. Looking for a new club in Brisbane so I can get back into it and take my boy along when he's old enough. Done my time for 3rd Dan just haven't graded yet. Gets funky in the Dans having to do flying board kicks above your head and over 5 blokes as well as punching through 8 rooftiles and sparring 3 black belts simultaneously and all that sort of stuff. Good fun.

Cheers,
Mike
