Are back-off sets useful after a strength workout?

The theory I subscribe to is that over time you must aim to adapt to an increasing workload of volume within a certain working range/%. Increasing your capacity for volume is just as important as increasing maximal strength. I don't think it's coincidence that the strongest people in the world...

    Squatting shoes

You just gotta experiment, down to the individual it seems. Personally, I squat olympic style full depth, and if anything no heel = a bit more poundage, but the movement pattern does change. 3/4" heel I can stay very upright, without heels = it looks a bit like a lowbar squat. I like an 0.6"...

    Squatting shoes

They certainly are in my size (US 9.5-10). My feet are certainly narow (and flat). I've tried Do-wins (which I own), Addidas Powertrainer (which I own), Addidas Adipower and Nike Romaloes. Compared to all of those the Addidas Powertrainer are the narrowest and best-fitting by a significant...

Are back-off sets useful after a strength workout?

Bit different to the way this author is suggesting they be implemented, but yes "back off" sets work. The general premise of Bulgarian programming is basically work up to a daily training max every day, then do "back off" sets (usually mostly triples) for volume. My understanding is the daily...

    Squatting shoes

Addidas Powertrainer have a 0.6" heel, maybe worth looking into. They suit narrow feet too (moreso than the Do-wins), which I'm guessing may apply to you?

    The PB Thread

Yep I back squat Olympic style (140kg training max at the moment), so 85% of that @120kg front squat is about right on what's generally expected. I do the oly lifts a bit for fun/variety lifts but am pretty poor at them. However I really enjoy oly style squatting so I continue to train that...

    Asymmetric gains

everyone is going to be a different in terms of lever ages etc. IMO as long as you do SOME overhead and rotator cuff work and can bench without pain, you're fine. FYI I've been on Bulgarian Method programming for the last few months, I bench heavy with volume 4 times or more a week, working up...

    Box Squats

Generally low-bar done correctly, you will squat significantly bigger weights. For most body shapes it gives superior mechanics and also you are squatting to a more shallow depth (even a full low-bar squat is higher as your shins are more vertical). I used to low-bar (quite poorly with...

    Box Squats

As an olympic style squatter boxes are completely useless, I can't get into position on a box since it's knee forwards and hips straight down. Yes my experience is pretty scant, and I don't even low-bar, but I don't see why as a raw lifter you wouldn't just do deep paused squats instead of box...

    Grip Strength

I disagree on this, IMO the correlation is quite different - overhead press and bench press are rather similar movements, CoC and deadlifting are not. But I see what you are getting at and it's a good point. I agree, but my point is focusing time/energy on direct forearm work could be...

    Grip Strength

Some authors have suggested grip strength is not necessarily directly transferable to different conditions or range of motion, like the example you give - squeezing closed a CoC and static holding onto a deadlift bar are completely different movements. One is a dynamic movement and one is...

    5/3/1 vs Sheiko

I think the general consensus is 531 is more of a general program and not specialised for powerlifting, as you are not handling maximal weights very often. Is your goal powerlifting or general strength/aesthetics? Either way, if you are consistently progressing on it, why fuck with it (unless...

    Squat shoes?

I either own or have tried the following shoes: Do-wins Pros -Properly built and wooden heel, serious lifting shoe -Very durable -Fair bit cheaper than flagship Nike or Addidas, great value. Cons - Not the most comfortable, they don't breathe well and stiff until broken in, I blistered up. -...

    Splits

Why not just squat more and drop deadlifts for a while altogether, or do deads for speed work at lower volume/weight? If your squat is lagging, chances are focusing on bringing that up will also bring your DL up, even with minimal DLing.
