    Bulgarian method article on t-nation

Well I started Bulgarian Method adapted to PLing this week. Olympic back squats, front squats, power cleans and bench press will be the bulk of my volume. "secondary' movements will be snatch, ohp, DL, sumo DL, low bar squat, which are mainly for the sake of variety/skill. Bulk volume in...

    Squats

You are not going to make much progress on your squat training inconsistently AND doing heaps of running/rubgy. Pretty simple, if you want a big squat, train squat frequently, consistently and heavy. Decide what your priorities are and make it happen no excuses. While still playing regular comp...

    Strength / Endurance Training

Up until a few months ago, I was playing soccer/futsal a couple of hours most weeks while lifting. After a certain point, my squat and DL pretty much stopped progressing and stagnated for about a year, despite trying various things. So I made the chioce and now play very little soccer...

    Posterior Chain

What about doing some conventional pulls for reps work instead of sumo? Higher recruitment/workload for the lumber region methinks.

    Boxjumps as an accessory

Yep that's 90cm under foot. Though that was measured from a step-forward, not from a completely stationary position. I was under the impression the NBA high-flyers have verticals of over 40" or 1 metre, and according to wiki 40" or above is considered 'elite'. Either way, @5"11" I don't think my...

Elephant in the room/emperors new clothes

I think it's pretty common knowledge that there are some massive freaks lifting massive weights taking performance enhancers - not to discount their work ethic/dedication, but it's the nature of competitive strength sports. My question is: in federations that apparently test, how effective is...

    Boxjumps as an accessory

I throw them in every now and then. But I generally prefer them as a warmup/priming excercise BEFORE serious lifting - for assistance work of that nature I prefer to do power cleans or snatches. But to be honest I just do jumps mainly for fun/variety, I don't feel like they add much training...

    Power Cleans

on 531 I like to often add in power cleans, front squat or some type of oly movement as squat assistance work. Not sure if it helps improve my squats or DL, but I'm enjoying learning the oly stuff and it's a lot of fun/variety. On 531 deload week I will tend to do more oly stuff for variety...

    Deadlift comp prep

oops, I meant working up from triples and then finishing on 85% for a single. Something like this: bar x 5 3 x 40%, 45%, 50%, 55%, 60%, 65%, 70% 2 x 75%, 80% 1 x 85% IMO for a novice or intermediate lifter, technique, confidence and possibly even outright strength will decline quite rapidly...

    Deadlift comp prep

I disagree with this, from the perspective of a less skilled/experienced lifter. I think it's important to keep training the lifts up to maybe a couple of days out, but keeping the volume and % down to avoid accumulated fatigue. And reduce or drop assistance work. The reason for this is to...

    Maintaining on a holiday

    1. Some of us LOVE training and don't see any reason not to, holiday or not. 2. If you are competing and driven to be the best you can possibly be, wasted progress is time wasted you will never get back. 3. I would argue 3 weeks will result in quite a significant decline in strength and work...

    Sumo Vs. Conventional Deadlifts

Whether you are going to be better on Conventional or Sumo seems mostly dependent on leverages. For example big hips/short arms = sumo, lanky long arms = conventional. I've noticed most of the big pullers around on youtube etc seem to train both, however. That's why perhaps some extra calf...

    Ed Coan interview, periodisation.

I strongly agree with this, this is what I did when doing something similar to the Bulgarian Method, and more recently on 531 I do speed work as my warm up for every session. For example Squat 531 day looks something like: Olympic Squat bar x 5 60 x 3 70 x 3 80 x 3 90 x 3 working sets: 100 x 5...

    The PB Thread

Good stuff all round people. Recent training/assistance PBs@78-79kg: Olympic front squat - 110kg Power clean - 80kg Ohp - 60 x 3 All done with good speed/form with plenty left in the tank - enjoying going up in small increments and being able to look forward to an easy PB in something pretty...

    Ed Coan interview, periodisation.

Playing devil's advocate here, but is it entirely possible that Ed Coan achieved such immense success despite using linear periodisation? Not trying to suggest he didn't work his arse off, bit who's to say he mightn't have done even better on other methods of programming? For example, looking...

    How much sleep?

My routine during the week is pretty much from 9 -9.30 I will start my 'winding down'. This means reading or watching something not overly stimulating, forums. listening to some chilled music, reflecting on the day, having a wank etc. When I feel sufficiently relaxed (usually 10.30-11) I'll go...

    The PB Thread

    Recent training/assistance PBs @78-79kg: - ~93cm vertical leap - just out of curiosity, used to play volleyball. Fuck yeah pretty surprised/pleased. - Olympic front squat - 107.5kg - Olympic squat - 112.5 x 6 - Ohp - 57.5 x 5 - Power clean - 77.5kg

    How much sleep?

I would like to mention that since my early teens I've suffered some insomnia/sleep anxiety on and off. Melatonin seemed to fix it for a few months then stopped working. Then early this year I began daily supplementation of fish oil (6g), Zinc (500mg), Magnesium (1500mg), Vit D (5000UI), as...

    Maintaining on a holiday

Fair enough. Once you are done de-loading, which IMO really should just be a few days if you aren't an elite lifter, I reckon drop volume/accessories and just make sure you hit some heavy work sets on the main lifts to get in and out of the gym quickly?
