Beetroot juice - proven to improve performance ?

Know for a fact that Beetroot juice was being used by Essendon football club PRE-game. It may either a) be beneficial or b) cause soft issue injuries!
 
Heard of this a while a go along with Cherry Juice because the British Cycling team were using them for muscle inflammation and recovery if I remember correctly.
 
I hate beet root and refuse to eat it or go near its juice....my lifts suck....maybe they're onto something.
 
I love beetroot :)

Baby beets, rocket, crumbled feta cheese, a squeeze of lemon juice, spansh onion thinly sliced, roasted pine nuts.
