Lower Back "pop" Yesterday

Mackie

Fridge Kunce
So whilst attempting the herculean task of tying up my shoelaces yesterday I felt a "pop" in my lower back.. I'm not in any severe debilitating pain, I'd call it constant slight discomfort.

What annoys me the most is I resistance train 4-6 days per week, always concentrate on form over weight and then I cop an injury doing up shoe laces :(

Never the less, I have discontinued training for the next 2 days. This afternoon I just did some stretching and rolled my back on a foam roller which made the same "pop" sound several times (a sound very similar to what you hear when you get your back cracked) and made me feel considerably better.

On a positive note the discomfort is felt several inches to the right of my spine and as mentioned I am not in any severe pain. I have however booked a physio appointment for this Wednesday at 2:20pm as you don't really want to play guessing games when it comes to back injuries so fingers crossed its nothing major and i'm back training sooner rather than later...

Ok so re-scheduled my appt at physio and went in this morning, was there for about 1.5hrs and turns out ive sprained my back :(

So no resistance training for at least a week, mobility work, anti inflammitries and just try and be as careful as possible then move to BW resistance work and progress slowly from there.

2 more appointments booked - friday this week and tuesday next week...

Take it easy mate!! Did you get any celebrex? Valium? After my back op, those two got me thru some pain!!

Cheers mate, neither of those two, im not in any major pain so i dont want to take anything stronger than i need to - just got to pick up some nurofen on the way home and have 2 of those twice a day until friday afternoon, or i could just man up...

But physio's orders was nurofen so best to stick with what's been recommended and just keep on top of the stretching / rehab / mobility work.

I do feel considerably better after the first session though which is good, slow and steady wins the race though.. No point pushing to get back early only to injure myself again...

Grab a lacrosse ball and start loosening all the fibres in your lower back, quadradus lumborum muscles etc.

The standard physio response of no gym, rest and anti inflammatories is code for I have no idea what's going on. If there are any osteopaths or physios in your area that specialise in active release, myofacial release and trigger point therapy I highly recommend you see one of them.

@Camo1902; Thanks heaps man, much appreciated

@myst; thanks for the recommendation, I probably should have been a little more detailed in my earlier posts, I had an electronic stimulator and a heat pack my lower back for about 10-15mins yesterday which was followed by a little deep tissue / fibre release work.

I have also been given a specific stretching routine to complete 3 x a day for the next 3 days (next appt on friday) which seems to be helping, i'm definitely considerably less uncomfortable than i was this time yesterday...

Just looking forward to being 100% mobile again and not having to be so ginger whilst completing "everyday tasks"

Good to hear Mackie! Sounds like things will be fine, when you start to feel 100% again keep up the prehab work to keep all those muscle fibres healthy and loose.

If it makes you feel better, I wrecked my back trying to pick up a duck...........

Thanks myst; will do... Im very much a stickler when it comes to following the rehab requirements so hopefully a speedy recovery is on the way.

Will keep updating as the days pass :)

LOL Thanks, I had a good old chuckle at that :)

Whats made me laugh about the whole situation is that i attend the gym regularly doing DL's, Rack Pulls etc and then i go and cop an injury in a similar manner to you by just attempting an "everyday task"

Oh well the road to recovery is underway...

talking about silly ways to do your back, i was closing a screen door at home and it went, i had to lay on the floor and couldnt move, it was so bad it was effecting my breathing for a few hours, think it ended up being a pinched nerve, but man i felt stoopid....

Ha Ha, while being sorry to hear that others have previously endured what i currently am or worse, its also nice to know that im not the only one thats felt stoopid after doing it by such a mundane task.

Sometimes its the littlest things that can do it.... As soon as it happen i just thought to myself "Your bloody kidding me" which was quickly followed by "this isnt good" BUT im staying positive and im on the up and up so its happy days...

Gotta love doing injuries in retarded ways. I fell and subluxed my patella a few years back trying to stop my shopping trolley rolling into a car while I was unloading groceries. So fucking embarrassing!!!

Yeah I hate that duck. 3 days of almost complete paralysis and 7 years later spinal fusion.

I didn't even get to eat it.

Look after it, is my advice and do all the boring stuff.....its worth it in the end!

In your defence you were trying to be a good member of the community, most people would of just let the trolley go and hope noone sees. :D

It's almost always the little tasks that cause back injuries (tying shoe laces, picking something off the floor, turning quicker than you'd planned etc) Mostly because we don't give any real thought to the mechanics involved so we don't prepare our bodies properly for the movement as we really should IE: you don't set yourself up like you're about to lift something heavy.

And as my spinal surgeon once said to me, "A light globe doesn't blow because you turned it on. It blows because you turned it on and off 400 times before that. It's an accumulation of wear and the same reason your seeing me now." :)

It's usually only after you've suffered any real back trauma you give a lot more thought to even the simplest of movements. Just because you lift heavy and don't have any injuries, it doesn't mean your not setting yourself up for one sooner or later. There's a fair few people here with fucked backs who thought it would never happen to them, me included.

Good point GUZZLA; i'm definitely guilty of not thinking about it or preparing myself to perform the movement - as mentioned didn't even give any real thought to it at the time.

Suspected just to be a sprain at this stage, hopefully that's all it is stage and my back isn't completely fuaarked.

I will definitely be paying more attention from now on that's for sure...

i re injured my back this week, by stretching in bed...

i maybe aggravated it last week, pulling 140 for 10, but just that stretch was enough to send it over the edge.

I think it may still be a good precaution to get a ct on you back, most places should Bulk bill so it shouldn't cost anything, just a get a referral from your doc..

my current back pain feel like a numbness, but out to the right is discomfort, usually its from a nerve being squished..
