Is 1" hole spacing on a rack of any practical benefit for strength training or is it a marketing tool?

The benefit is that you have finer positioning of spotting bars and hooks. This can make racking and unracking the bar easier and spotting bars in the correct position relative to body dimensions

Also it makes more sense in benching for example.

Where having a large gap might mean the safeties wont allow you to get as low as you might want.
