NEXT time you catch a whiff of a particularly smelly fart, maybe you should thank the offender for saving your life.
Although the odour has a reputation for being disgusting, Britain’s University of Exeter has discovered that in the right doses, hydrogen sulfide can help cure a range of problems including stroke, diabetes and dementia.
The university found that tiny doses of the stinky gas could be turned into a compound called AP39.
When AP39 is delivered to the right place in a cell, it protects the mitochondria — which creates energy production and regulates inflammation.
Preventing or reversing this mitochondria damage keeps us healthy and looking younger. It can also ward off diseases such as heart failure and arthritis.
Dr Mark Wood said: “Although hydrogen sulfide is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases.”
