Protein Alternatives!?

Big Mick

"2014 - Kunce of the year"
With all the WPI/WPC wars going on at the moment I am considering alternative protein powder sourches.

Now before commenting consider this is the "SUPPLEMENTS" section of the forum, so I don't want any responses telling me about chicken, beef, eggs or any other whole food sources from the 'usual suspects'

Now I have been around for a while, may be too long a while, but I remember first training with weights in about 1983, and I bought my first Aussie made Samson bench and weight plates in about 1986 or 1987, which I still own and use today, so yes I have been around for a while.

Back in the day the only supplements widely available were made by Weider (as in Joe Weider), and most people training back then used either Weider Protein or Albumen (Egg White Powder) or both, as well as Desiccated Liver Tablets.

I have recently obtained about 3-4 months supply of Universal Nutrition Desiccated Liver Tablets, with another 4 month supply on back order. Have started taking them as directed this week (two tablets with every meal as well as two before bed) Google the claimed benefits of liver yourself if you are interested or have never heard about this stuff. (also a source of quality protein).

I only just started considering egg white powder as a protein supplement again.

Anyone still use it??

What do people think??

Pro's/Con's??

And yes I do eat meat and eggs, this powder is just to fill in blanks with minimal calorie intake.

Have you had egg white powder before?

It does not mix well, it taste really bad (chalky). You will need to flavour it and use a blender.

Yes I have have had it back in the 80's as above, I don't recall it as being particularly bad tasting, but may be time fades the memories:p I do recall it not mixing to well though.

From what I can work out egg white protein is one of the few complete protein sources, I think we used to add it to other foods as well, memories have faded a bit, but I remember buying it from the health food shops and it being fairly cheap back then.

Food, its not rocket science mate!

Please re read my above post. :cool:May be concentrate on the second and last paragraph. Pretty simple I thought!!

The thing is if you buy any other type of powder aren't you still vulnerable to companies doing the dodgy like the whey at the moment.

My alternative to whey powder when I go away and don't want to have protein powder is jerky and pork crackle but its too expensive to do often.

I have tried egg white powder and don't like it much. Funny texture, flavour and mixes badly.

There is always pea and rice protein powder (or blends). They can be really good although if using in shakes, best with milk (dairy or non dairy) as they taste funny with water.

SunWarrior and Growing Naturals rice protein are quite good ... and come in vanilla and chocolate.

or just use instantised BCAAs.

Considered that, but not sure egg protein can be cut as easy as whey where cheap milk powder can easily be substituted.

Agree with the beef jerky. Had a bit of it while away last week and when on the road traveling, and yes agree on the price. Might be time to make jerky again.

Rice and pea proteins ain't gonna happen, not even sure that they are a complete protein with a full and useable amino acid profile having been sourced from vegetarian sources. They have very low bioavailability, meaning they can not easily be used by the human body, pea protein being around 65 compared to egg white which are 100 on the scale.

Some good points though.

I think you should do some more research on your alternative sources if you think that eg pea protein doesn't have a good BCAA profile. That along with high digestibility is much more preferable to me than something with a higher bioavailability that I can't digest as easily and costs much more per kg.

Already done my research, this is why I commented, Pea protein is harder to digest, and has a lot less protein per weight making any saving null and void as you have to consume a lot more to get the same amount of protein, and as well as having an incomplete amino acid profile.

Amino Acids per 100g Protein

BCAA's.......................WPI...........................PEA

Leucine.....................12.06g........................5.93g

Isoleucine ...................7.03g.......................3.43g

Valine.........................6.68g........................3.57g

The same pattern continues for the rest of the essential amino acids, if you don't believe me Google is your friend.

QUOTE:
Other distinct and highly beneficial proteins found in whey, but absent in pea protein, are Immunoglobulins, Lactoferrin and Serum Albumin. These particular proteins are a powerful defense mechanism for our immune system. They are transporters for antibodies, inhibit bacterial and viral growth and act as a barrier against invaders, among others things. What’s unique about these proteins is that they are only present in milk derived products and cannot be found in any plant source. Also, another amino acid present in whey protein but absent in pea protein is cysteine. Cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine are the three precursors necessary for intracellular glutathione (GSH) production. Glutathione is considered our body's 'Master Antioxidant' and without cysteine GSH production will be lacking.

True true - I agree that pea protein doesn't seem to come close to matching up when you read that article, but that page is produced by makers of a whey protein supplement.

There's a few good comments on this page and there's no commercial interest :p

Lactose Intolerant Bodybuilding: Pea Protein Isolate Amino Acid Profiling! Part 3 - BCAA's and general overview!

Yep I can see the benefits of pea protein for lactose intolelrant people, and it may be still good for everyone. And it does present an alternative, but I am guessing it could also be prone to tampering like the whey.

Not sure. I have several test kits on my way from BN, so I will test my protein, and might even get it laboratory tested, have been looking into it and considering a full test or what is actually in the protein I bought, as this stuff kills me, my last order was over $300 for protein, and I have the feeling in was sold milk powder instead of the top of the range HWPI I payed for.

Depending on the outcome of my home test I will go from there.

incorrect.

Protien powders make me feel crook in the guts these days.

Ive bought Daves stuff over the years, possibly silly but I actually feel it doing good.

plant proteins in alot of ways are better for you than animal

think about it, a cow in china is probably producing milk that goes through a factory process to make it as alien to the body as any processed food

hemp seeds are a great way to get some natural proteins, fats, fiber, with all the amino acid profiles you want

my first response still stands, FIND A FOOD SOURCE, not a supplement

your body will thank you, srs
