Rapture? No idea what that is.
End of the world, doubt it.
Heaven and Hell is what I believe in, when you die, and we all will, you go to one or the other.
But no gerry, I don't think I'll be snatched away before the world ends, I'm gonna die just like every other kunce in the world.

I'm a believer!
Can't say I have lived my whole life by the bible, but none the less, a believer I am.
One day judgement I will face, have no illusions about that.

This for sure.

Have read the bible, book of Mormon and definitely believe a lot of these events have happened. Not just the thing of movies.

... Pretty much means we're screwed bro when the time comes :(

you think your upbringing contributed to your belief that these things happened in the bible?some of its pretty hard to believe.the existence of invisible beings that control the world..the idea that there was a violent civilisation thousands of years ago that met its end by a world wide deluge..thats sort of stuff...how can you believe that?

As brutha Jungnaut has said... If Hollowood can make it look real - it must be possible

I dunno man. Faith I guess.

Don't you think there's more going on than we can perceive?

I don't think we're the centre of the universe and am pretty sure theres lots going on that we are simply unable to comprehend...

Chits getting heavy up in here

Every society that achieved a level of civilisation, had a religion and the major religions have a lot in common.

Here's the big question and part of the answer to the original question. Which came first? Did enlightenment lead to stability and order or did the organised society lead to enlightenment?

I think religion was developed by people who wanted to create a predictable, stable population. I think they invented a big carrot and a big stick and an invisible judge that gets you after you die so that no-one could disprove them. This model has lasted thousands of years and has enabled the development of virtually every technology that we enjoy today from agriculture to electronics. Disorganised barbarians don't invent things, they starve in winter and perish in summer.

The system would have started small, on a tribal level but the advantages that organised tribe enjoyed would quickly lead to converts or territorial expansion. The system slowly found answers to all the sceptical questions and managed to convince people that faith was justified. Remember the costs of opting out at that early stage were very high. If you don't believe now, you still live in a civilised society, in those days you went back to catching your own goannas and finding your own water.

Christianity is the only religion that I have a reasonable knowledge of and it seems to me that it is basically a central framework as outlined above with a patchwork of little rules for specific problems that arose over time. The common theme is always public health and stability. Don't kill, don't eat shellfish, don't eat pork, don't have sex with lots of people and don't thieve stuff, they are all based in decency or public health.

I think the system is beginning to collapse but it may have served its purpose. Society is well enough accepted now that the legal framework and the will of the people can probably maintain it without the threat of the invisible judge in the afterlife.

Back to the original question, I have serious doubts that there is any spirit life. I think we are a product of science and science can probably explain what's going to happen to us in the afterlife. Having said that, I acknowledge that the benefits that religion (through the society that it built) brought to us are very real. The world is a better place for the existence of a concept that probably doesn't exist. That's pretty cool when you think about it.

We would laugh if an adult still believed in Santa or Easter bunny. Religion is just fairytales for adults.

I find it a paradox, not of someone thinking an invisible man exists but how anyone can place confidence in believing something 'out there' controls them.

Paranoia and schizophrenia seem to be right at home there (kinda sums up gerrydot too)

why do u have faith in something that the rest of us fail to see?whats different about you?

...Religion is just fairytales for adults.

Man, I hate this. Not saying which side of the fence I'm on, but think about this:

If religion IS just fairytales for adults then insulting them does little to change their minds. And if it IS just fairytales, then it's in society's best interests to educate these people. The more you take logic out of the equation (by resorting to name-calling, effectively) the more you discourage those "believers" from engaging in rational debate.

On the other side of the coin, people have a right to believe what they want.

Lol.. Are you suggesting I'm the only one with faith?

It matters not anyway.

A true 'man of the cloth' would consider me a hypocrite.

Just because I believe doesn't mean I've been 'walking the path' .. you dig?
