Playing for England in a 1989 World Cup qualifier, Terry Butcher received a nasty gash on the head that required stitches. Being a trooper, he got the stitches and then returned to the game. However, repeated headers opened the gash up again, and the bandage wasn’t nearly enough to contain the blood.

The result was this gory image.
