Found this and thought it was a good watch - these guys of this era through trial and error really set the platform for how bodybuilders, athletes and the like should be eating - and still to this day alot of the most successful bodybuilders, powerlifters, athletes etc follow these simple yet effective guidelines to eating and approaching a diet.
Ric Drasin breaks down the typical 70′s Bodybuilding Diet.
Besides raiding all the nearby All You Can Eat places he, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dave Draper stuck to a dead simple high fat, high protein and low carbdiet.
Protein came from foods and not so much from supplements. Bread, pasta, potatoes and rice were a no no.
Monday through Saturday they stuck to the template below. Sunday was a cheat day (which he does not recommend anymore).
For me personally, bulking was fine. Nothing special, still gained fat like normal when bulking. Gained strength pretty easily.
I found for me cutting fat is where it sucked bad. Low energy, lost weight but lost a heap of muscle. Lost a heap of strength. Got very lean but had people telling me I looked like a cancer patient.

I would say its safe bet. It was fairly easy to get lean just the end result wasn't great. After the low carb cut the next serious stint at cutting I added carbs back in. Slow cut again, didn't lose strength and got down to the same BF as low carb but about 10kg heavier.
Not to mention the shit breath you end up with from going very low carb.
These days I have around 400g of carbs most days when cutting.
I would say when bulking or maintaining I can keep my BF at lower levels with carbs as well.
May be I should try CBL it might work for me, may be in the new year I will give it a run.
Will see how this 5/3/1 works out for me later this month when I test my 1rm, and will then decide on a plan for next year starting January.
At this stage looking at 3 months of 5/3/1 using my new 1rm as a base with body weight assist and HIIT on off days, and might run CBL with it and see what happens.

It wasn't low fat. I recorded everything on calorie king on my old laptop, I'll see if I can find it later. From memory calories were around 3500. Protein 300g, fat usually over 200, carbs under 50.
What is was is low carb and low carb doesn't seem to work for me.
I now consider carbs as important as protein when trying to get lean while keeping muscle.
