Arthritis - treatment

El Testicle

Goat that feeling
A'ight - Been diagnosed with arthritis in the left shoulder ACJ.

Thought it was muscular, but no.

Got cortisone shot yesterday, slowly feeling some relief with a view to being able to bench press (albeit lightly at 1st) and do some form of shoulder press one day soon-ish...

On the list to see specialist on public list as a back up option for surgery... Won't be holding my breath as I'm keen to get back into some serious training before I'm blowing out the candles on my 40th b'day cake .

Was in two minds about which category to post this under - injury vs. supplements.

Either way - I'm sure there some others on here who have experienced similar injuries ; my question is - What treatments have or are working well for you?

Fish oil? Krill oil? Glucosamine? Personally think they're all over-rated and b.s. as up until around 4 months ago I was still able to swing some decent weight around and took the above to alleviate the pain in my joints - to no avail or improvement.

I know the cortisone is just treating the symptom mostly, so am keen to hear if anyone has taken / done anything with any success to actually help the condition.

Anyone got any other remedies? Home-made or otherwise? Or should I just face the fact I'm an old kunt

the question is how much of fish oil and glucosamine you were taking? if it's 1g a day etc... it will not do a thing. Lots of people say glucosamine doesn't work. But it works for me (I have half of my knee cut out). I take 8g+ of fish oil per day and eat a fair bit of oily fish. Also I take 6g of glucosamine per day. I arrived at those figures through taking various doses over the past 10 years... since my surgery. And I can still squat and deadlift. When I stop the supps for couple of weeks, I've problem walking up stairs pain free.

Hmmm ... dosage y'reckon? might be worth a re-think.

How were you getting that amount in? Buying the stuff in liquid form? Or simply taking them like tic-tacs?

yeah I'm in the Glucosamine does work some of the time. Not totally sure though now.

I thought Cortisone wasn't worth the risk due to sides later in life, unless you were a Pro Athlete or something, but whatthefuckdoIknow.

Well, if there's a risk, my doc didn't mention any! :p

All good though, 4 months without serious training is 4 months too long

Fish oil does not help the joints, it simply blocks the inflammatory modulators of the immune system, giving the illusion of joint health improving.

I stopped taking any sort of unsaturated fat supplements a long time ago.

Got any more info on this?

I always thought that what you said was correct but ended up reducing overall inflammation as a result. And since arthritis is an inflammatory disease it did actually improve joint health or at least assist in preventing it getting worse.

Yeah, and if fish oil is just a mask... Is there actually anything else out there that can help the joint itself when taken orally? Or again, is it just a case of getting old...

It depends how far along the arthritis is, after a certain point the degradation is what causes the pain, and if it's rheumatoid arthritis the joint degradation will not stop even with nutritional and/or pharmacological intervention.

It can also interfere with tissue/organ repair/regeneration if your diet is already rich in vegetable oils. Not to mention the tendency for oxidation.

Well, it's only just begun presenting itself in the form of pain/sensation in the last 4-5 months to the point where I knew it was something different than a sprain or tear that I could recover from with rest...

Having said that, the sports doc. I saw said it could've been from a knock I took playing rugby or some shit years and years ago and is only now starting to play up...

Arthritis can come about from a joint injury, so he could very well be correct.

Regenerative Medicine | Regeneus

These guys claim to use stem cells derived from fat to regenerate tissue, although i am not quite certain of their claims.

Glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and the two i... [N Engl J Med. 2006] - PubMed - NCBI

Talks about various treatments - 1500mg glucosamin, 1200mg chondroitin sulfate (and both) daily or 200mg of celecoxib (NSAID) and a placebo, nothing was significantly better than the placebo.

I had quite a number of clients with arthritis, so i have done plenty of research on the topic!

Try one of these bro

^^ Thanks fellas.

Actually been away all week for work, just got in Sunday and had my specialists appt. at public hospital yesterday co-incidentally.

Opting for the procedure. i.e. they cut away 8mm or so of the collar bone to stop the AC joint rubbing against it.

Will probs. be on the waiting list for another 6 months before anything comes of it anyways so plenty of time to psyche myself up for it!

im 29 and in need of the same surgery, mine came from a AC strain i had a few years, now my shoulder clicks and hurts on certain movements, ive just learnt to train around it, but will eventually get the op

Celebrex works for.me last year or so after my knee scrape op I dont use fish oil only glucosamine and virgin cold press olive oil straight from a farm. 5-6 table spoon a day.
