Modafinil

OK, I know this one's (supposed to be) a performance enhancer for the mind, rather than the bod, but maybe someone here has some experience with it, and can give some opinions of the pros and cons.

I bought some back in November, but was waiting for some health tests so that I would have a base-line for any experimentation (as mentioned here: http://ausbb.com/showthread.php?p=520962#post520962).

I'm basically a lazy and disorganized bastard, and I'm looking for a majic pill to fix this. I was first alerted to M by that blog with the oiled coffee, and it sounds like good stuff.

Here's my experience so far, in diary form:

Saturday last
- drove back home, from a big family Xmas in the bush. Lots had been drunk over the preceeding week, and it was a long drive.

Sunday - pretty tired - slept much of the morning. Had a beer and a bottle of red with dinner. Bed (with benefits) around midnight.
Woken around 4am by some bloody burglar alarm nearby.

Monday - did a few domestic jobs during the day; didn't have any alcohol. Making all sorts of plans for getting my act together on a number of fronts, in the new year (hopefully with the help of M).
Did my first serious workout since Xmas.
Bed around midnight - no action but - Mrs well asleep by then.

Tuesday - woke up 6am, full of resolve (note - at this stage, I hadn't taken any M). Took my first dose of 100mg of M (half a 200mg pill) at 6.15am. Had tea (as usual), and made a reasonably good start on tidying up my study - made quite a lot of floor space visible, by stacking piles of junk on top of each other. Bustled about with various things during the day, but probably didn't really achieve much. Did an arm workout in the late afternoon.

Now here's where I seriously breach proper drug trial protocol - I put another untested chemical into the system. I'd also bought some generic Cialis, and it had also been waiting, untried, in my pharmacoepia. I'd never had this or anything like it before ...

So, I swallowed a quarter of a 20mg pill at 7.20pm ... well (after a pleasant BBQ with friends, at which a not excessive amount of beer and wine was drunk by me), come midnight - a most impressive pump was achieved. This stuff is really something ... but I digress ...

Wednsday - woke up bright and early, feeling like the cat that had split the canary. Took another 100mg of M at 6.15 am.

I the morning, half an hour after I had taken the M, and (stupidly) after I had done my daily 30 pushups, I measured my bloodpressure:
209/74 WTF! - I measured it on the other arm - 155/75.
About an hour later, I measured on each arm again: 156/75 and 150/72.
45 mins after that, I measured again - 103/78 and 141/77.

This is funny - it's one of those automatic blood pressure machines, with a computer (rather than an experienced doctor) deciding when to make the pressure readings, so it can be confused by various things. My theory is that my arms (at least the left one) were too pumped by the previous afternoon's arm workout, and also by the morning's pushups, and so neither the 209 (if that were real, I'd be dead) nor the later 103 (I'm never that low, either) systolic readings were real. Have any of yous muscly-armed gents had difficulty getting blood pressure readings?

Nevertheless, the pressure readings of around 150 are probably real, and are higher than one would like.

I was busy all day, but, in retrospect, my achievements don't seem to have been much. No exercise apart from the morning pushups. No alcohol taken this day. A mutually enjoyable bedrooom experience was had around midnight.

Thursday
(today) - not quite so bright, and not quite so early this morning. Blood pressure immediately after rising (about 7am) was 124/82 and 127/82 - OK.

Took another 100mg M at 7.15am - I really have a whole lot of things to get done, and a schedule of New Year's resolutions to knuckle down to ...

Also took another 5mg of the love drug about 8am - however, my enhanced stamina did not find such an appreciative match in a weary wife this morning.

Today, I've had a bit of a headache most of the day, and have been feeling mentally tired. It's been very hot most of the day, so that has been a confounding factor, but I think it's more than heat for me.

Have done pretty much fuck all today. Did a light (mostly arms) workout this arvo, and got both surpriningly pumped (muscle-wise, that is), and briefly sore. The weight wasn't much, but many of the exercises were ones I don't often do.

So, here I am - the excessive length of this post shows that the M is having some mental effect on me, but is it doing me any good? Should I have more tomorrow? Should I give it a rest, and maybe try 200mg in a week or so? (100mg seems to be a fairly low dose, as far as reports on the internet go, but the stuff is sold [also] in pills of 100mg, so this amount must be the right dose for some people and purposes)

Also, and most significantly on this forum, does modafinil have any known or likely detrimental effects on muscle building, or other bodily things?

One last thing to note is that it seems to be having a mildish appetite suppressant effect on me. For some people this might be a positive; for others a negative.

:p

so your taking M to give you motivation to get things done and workout?

do you have a workout routine/plan other then arms and sexercise?

I've used it, never really in the way you're using it here. I've always used it at higher dosages (200mg qid) in combination with moderate to high dose caffeine for complete/near complete sleep deprivation or for long drives.

My housemate used it daily at 200mg mane for a three week period in the lead-up to exams, sleeping around 4-5 hours a night. No noticeable normal signs of sleep deprivation.

Using it long term is probably a bad idea, although it is very in vogue on a lot of trans-humanist sites. We don't have a known mechanism of action yet, and the current suggested mechanism of action involves increased sympathetic nervous tone. Chronic sns activation is bad for you.

Blood pressures: those numbers seem a little high. You could quite easily hit 200 as a short term peak though. Do you often have such large differentials across arms? That's usually a sign of a flow issue somewhere within the aorta or subclavians which should be checked out if you get it often. Why do you own your own sphygmo? Have you had problems with hypertension/other heart issues in the past?

I always had my bp jump while I was on it, as did my housemate. All measurements were done by steth (neither of us own an automated sphygmo). If your blood pressure is consistently high when you take it you probably don't want to use it regularly and should shift it back to an occasional use for increased performance.

The other thing that you have to consider with the Wednesday morning numbers is the effect of the cialis. I'm not sure what the half life of cialis is, but as cialis is a vasodilator it's very possible that as you eliminated it you went into reflex vasoconstriction, bumping your bp up even more. I wouldn't recommend combining them again.

It's also banned in competition for WADA tested sports, which may or may not affect you. It's fine to take out of competition though and the half life is 17 hours, which means it should be completely eliminated 85 hours after a dose. I don't take it for 2 weeks before a meet though, just to make sure.

No known detrimental effects to muscle growth or anything like that. Some probable short term physical ped aspects (slower to tire during intense exercise).

Can someone pm me a link, the online chemist I have used before no longer stocks it and I wouldn't mind trying it as a performance aid in high pressure work environment

Check whirlpool, they've got a lot of threads on the best place to get it. I used SR, but whether or not you'd trust SR 2.0 or not at the moment is questionable.

Apparently customs won't seize it, btw, so international is fine.

Yeah most of the wp threads I read recommend a certain Indian chemist which I periodically buy meds from, but they no longer carry it @sandinface; help me out with a hook up.

I'm assuming adc? Last time I looked there were a bunch of different sources suggested. SR 2.0 is cheaper for anything more than 200x200mg last time I looked.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

When I measure BP on two arms, it's generally becuase the first reading is anomalous. I've read that the act of measuring BP (the cuff pressure) will make an immediate subsequent reading on the same arm invalid - so I read from the other arm.

In the past (I've just had a look at my notes), I've had inter-arm differences of up to 30mg, but then, I've only read both arms when arm #1 has given a funny result.

The reason I've got one of these machines isn't because I've got a fkt hrt [fk, I hope not], but rather because my very elderly mother has been having bad skin problems which she attributes to her blood pressure medication. She's on this because the health department recomendations about what constitutes "high blood pressure" has been revised recently, and her BP is now in the range where she is automatically put on BP-reducing medication. I got one for her, for her to check her BP out for herself, and one for me too, as they were only $28 each.

I hadn't thought of the Cialis. Of course, it's a dickovasodilator, but I didn't think it was a general vasodilator.

More research necessary ...

Thanks - I'm just doing this for myself - no competition issues.

That's useful information.

1medstore - fast delivery, good service (ie, real people at the other end of the email). You have to pay up front with a bank transfer, but they have a CBA account, so no international money transfer fee.

so your taking M to give you motivation to get things done and workout?

No problem with motivation to work out. It's something to help me get the other stuff done that I'm after.

do you have a workout routine/plan other then arms and sexercise?

Yes.

I mentioned arm workout (1) because it may have contributed to the funny BP reading, and (2) because I had more soreness than i would have expected from such a light workout.

"Sexersise" - no, it's just sex [for me ...]. With this magic chemical, you can just lie on your back, and enjoy the pole dance.
