Never really posted before but i see there is alot of people here with back concerns thought id give my opinion (not medical advice) in what to look for aswell as things that i was told to help i have been dealing with a bulging disc problem for the last few years and finally got it right.
First and foremost see a physio not a chiro if you have a dignosed disc bulge, if you can aford to see a physio dont be tight arse and see a good sports physio which uses medX equipment it will be the best money you ever invested.
Couple points on what to look for in a buldging disc
- tingling/numbness legs & soles of feet
- Bending forward induces more numbness/tingling/shooting pain etc
- Shooting pain in glute/lower back/legs/feet
- stretching won't make it better can and usually does make it worse if you stretch with to much force
- sitting aggrevaters it
- standing may or may not offer relief
theres a lot of problems it can cause ranging from not being able to hold in shit/piss legs going completly numb and not being able to stand to just some tingling in the glute or hip legs etc.
If your back and supporting muscles are already strong it can be a short recovery but will still take 6-12 weeks for it heal completley then building back up slowly to the weight you were using.
what i was advised to do was back arches 40-80 a day a back arch is were you lie on your stomach push yourself up like a push up but leave your hips legs fet planted to the ground and push yourself up arching your back i was told this helps force the disc back in so it can heal.
The lower back machine is the only piece of equipment that can truely isolate the lower back, medx and Kieser are the only machines specifically designed to measure strength.
This equipment was originally designed in 1985, far ahead of it's time.
Good thread, i am seeing a physio today specialising in weight lifters sports injuries. I was unaware of MedX. Hoping i never need it but handy to know.

Forget about the physio get your arse to a good orthopedic surgeon for a proper diagnosis. Forget about CT scans too pony up the extra dollars and get an MRI straight away.
To put it in context the authorities don't trust physios to prescribe medication so why would you trust them to diagnose a medical condition? They exist to assist in rehab.

I went to 2 physios who diagnosed disc injuries - both sports physios. I went to a third sports physio who works with olympic athletes and AFL clubs. He did a few tests and thought it was very unlikely I had disc issues but said the only way to truly tell in my case was an MRI. He sent me straight for an MRI. MRI cleared me of any disc abnormalities. The back pain was probably facet joint or SI joint related and was actually aggravated by the standard protocol for disc injury - Mackenzie extensions (these are the lying back extensions referred to in posts above).
I also had tingling sciatica like pain, but this was incidential and caused by an overractive piriformis. It was resolved by simple stretches and foam rolling the glutes. I also got dry needling which helped loosen up my hips a lot.
