The Science of Weightlifting

Here's a video I find myself watching from time to time. IMO it's quite good, shows a brief history of weightlifting, the biomechanics of how it works & how it should be done as well as some general info about wrestling.

Nice idea for a clip. There is a few claims in it that I'd take a different perspective on, certainly the one about the press being eliminated from competition due to injury is a tired old one that never seems to go away. The people who were actually involved in the sport at that time all say it was removed because of the difficulty and politics in judging and everyone not involves says it had to do with injury.

The graphics are a little limited and therefore misleading and inconsistent with the voice over at times. On the whole though, a pretty good-faith attempt at pointing out the inescapable science of weightlifting. Sometimes the mentioning of the 's' word together with barbell training and sport is heretical on this forum; thanks for the link.

The official reason for removal of the press was the difficult in judging whether there was excessive layback. One of the problems with it was actually political, as many felt certain countries were being given more latitude than others by the judges. But many suspect the real reason it was ultimately removed was to reduce the length of the meet and number of events, much the same as why they later reduced the number of weight classes (and why IPF has now done the same for powerlifting).

The perfect example was of Alexeevs "press" to beat Redding.

One pressed, the other didnt, both passed
