Wrist less likely to go gay with a proper grip and the thumb will stop it. That's what thumbs are for. Ever try deadliftng heavy without the thumb?
Last time I competed I was told thumbless grip was not allowed on the bench.
the way iv been taught is to never dump the bar if you are getting a spot, and PA comps the lifters are asked to stay with the bar if they fail, this is for safety reasons for both the lifters and spotters, imagine getting 200 odd kg dropped into your elbows, hence why we dont chest support spot in PA in case it gets dumped, other thing in just thought of then is if it landed across your legs, you get quite close to the person your spotting. plus its easy to tweak something truing to jump out from under a bar.Sticky, if you don't mind and if you could be bothered, do you have an example (video) of an exampl where 5 spotters have been useful?
I'm not having a go I'm genuinely interested, would it be safer for all if the squatter just dumped the bar?

That was never a rule in any major fed.
+1Oni, that's incorrect.
Under IPF Rules:
- for the bench press, you must use "thumbs around grip" - this has been a rule for many years in the IPF
- safety stands must be attached to the bench at all events.

At every comp I've done I had to enter my bench rack heights, as well as safety stand heights. I just assumed other powerlifting feds did the same. Apparently not.
In multiply feds they have to use a safety sling in the monolift for safety reasons. No reason why they couldn't have safety stands for bench. Humans are fallible. Even good experienced spotters are fallible. Safety stands could've saved this bloke's life.

That was never a rule in any major fed. Was it the secret fed that doesn't allow you to take videos of yourself or partake in fun online competitions?
Let's hope the news monkeys don't turn this into a circus and point out pl as a dangerous sport.
You will stand corrected on this one. I rejoined this year after 14 years of no affiliation and little training. Last time I competed in a bench comp it was known as Australian powerlifting federation. The head referee back then told all participants not to use suicide grip.
Fyi I have taken videos and posted them here with a disclaimer that I am not a contender, I even used 100kg instead of my bodyweight of 94. I am having fun only as competing or having affiliation is against the rules of my ASADA recognised organisation.
At over 40 and nowhere near my old pb lifts, you will see on this thread 8 x 140kg and 20 x 100kg feet flat on the floor and arse on the bench in between helping the kids with their homework in the background. I think I might know what I am talking about with respect to the rules.

Dangerous things, those inanimate objects.
Scott, remember shorty and simon. If not ask MarkosAs do you really think PA would give a fly rats ass about a rep comp?
It's not a PL meet.
Its ok Oni.I stand corrected then
Is that a rule in GPC? I recently converted to thumbless grip as I find it superior but if it's not allowed.... then I see no point training it
LOL.
I can kick a football mate, but I would not argue that Im an athourity of the sport because of it.
