Newbie buying a Bench - Rebel Sport Quaility? Help please.

Figjam Brah

Srs feels brah
Hey all

Newbie here. Looking at getting a basic bench press, I already got a barbell/dumbbells and some weights which will cover be for now.

I'm in Adelaide and looking around at benches online atm. I had a look at rebelsport and they seem to have some basic ones (which is all i'm after) but was wondering what the quaility would be like, would be last or is it worth spending the extra??

I'll post up/edit more info later on when i can (the products im looking at).

Thanks in advance.

It would be complete rubbish. I remember using one the other day which had a 100kg rating. I pretty much weigh 100kg.

Check out the brand 'muscle motion', will cost more but you wont be buying a bag of dead cats.

See here. That is all.

Cheers,

Aaron.

PS - you can get 10% off for being an ausbb member.

PPS - This one looks to be good value for money. $322.50 shipped to your door, and will shit all over a $500 Avanti at Rebel Sport lol

Thanks all for the replies and info.

Gym direct is a site sponsor right, i'd love to buy from them, but i don't have a credit card (although i could use my brothers/farthers) and i'm not keen on buying online.

Some other benches i was looking at were:

This is the rebel sport one
Celsius CX240 Heavy Duty Weight Bench

Workout World | The Fitness Equipment Specialists - Avanti PB250 Bench Press
Workout World | The Fitness Equipment Specialists - Beginner Strength Package

The bench is a adjustable which seems like a good plus, I won't count the leg extension as being a bonus. That package also seems pretty good as i only have one barbell, so i can use one for the bench, the other for squats/deadlifts.

Or perhaps if i really want to spend it
Workout World | The Fitness Equipment Specialists - Avanti X475 Bench Press & Squat Rack
as it comes with a Bench and a squat rack, although i done a quick review search and it appears the squat rack is kinda luckluster.

Also last of all (yet probably most important) I am only 5' 6", 165cm and only around 53kgs, so i'm not going to have the same loads or stresses on the equipment and also not going to have the reach of you big fellas.

Thanks again.

Adrian, that last one you linked ($499), you'd be better off getting a MM power rack for $595 plus bench $250-$280, from Gym Direct. You'd have added bonus of pullup bars. Just need the bar and weights and you're set.

One thing with beginners that always concerns me is the cost outlay, and then guys realising it was just a fad...then they lose interest after a couple of months. If there is any risk of that you may be better off with the cheap shit and sell it on ebay if you lose interest....you'll lose less dosh that way. If you know you're fair dinkum then you should get the fair dinkum equipment..Gym Direct is much more specialised for weight training than Rebel Sport.

dkd your display pic is pedo. Change it to one of the following:
(1) A hot brunette
(2) Ke$ha
(3) Boxxy
(4) Kid Rock
(5) Kimbo Slice

Kimbo Slice would've been good until he started becoming a punching bag.

Boxxy..that would be continuing the pedo theme wouldn't it? Lol she looks like a 13yo Bjork.

Ke$ha....shiiiiiiiiit, she aint worth a chipped schooner glass imo.

I tried the feminine them recently but grew out of it......i'm a gunna stick with this psycho baby for a little while......it;s nicely evil.

I must agree, that having a baby as your profile pic (particularly one that you googled) is somewhat disturbing lol.

Adrian, you can pay GymDirect via credit card over the phone (thereby eliminating the use of the internet to purchase the equipment). This will not only get you a far superior product, but will save you money as well.

Buying an Avanti bench or similar, is a massive mistake. In fact, you'd be better off taking your $500 to the bank, having it converted into 5c pieces, putting those 5c pieces into some heshan bags, and throwing them around to get fit.

My first bench was an Avanti (which I bought whilst lifting weights was simply a fad for me), and cost me $500. The pin that held the leg curl in place bent from general use (never had more than 30kg on it), and the pins in the uprights bent as well... and I couldn't even bench 40kg then.

For what it's worth, take it or leave it.

Aaron.

Wow, really impressed with the forum so far, heaps quick replies and good advice (and the off topic is always amusing).

Yeah, i was thinking to myself it may just be a fad/new years thing. I have always enjoyed fitness though, so I would keep using it when the fad kicks in again. I'll try and stick to completing 8-12 week sessions at a time though.

I think I'll buy a cheapo one from Rebel Sport for a start, its my birthday in 2 months so if i keep dedicated I'll upgrade and buy a better one (will also be looking for a proper rack at that time) then and sell off the other. I'll buy from gymdirect if i keep motivated, happy to help out those that help out the site.

Thanks a heap fellas

Imo if you really want to get good results starting off you want to do something like markos' beginner program or starting strength. Trying to do those programs without a proper squat rack or weights to 180kg isn't going to let you progress properly.

If you want to see if you like it i reckon your better off joining a gym with proper equipment before putting a down payment on a commercial rack.

Also remember that quality equipment has a high resale value, shit stuff doesnt.

IMHO - you gotta spend some dollers to make decent home gym.

I have killed two awesome studio setups I had.

The fist one cost me about $1000 alll up, and I simply destroyed the bars, and I had this multi station thing that was stupid and I killed, it bent and I was forever drilling holes and re bolting things, as it couldn't hold the weight.

The second set up cost me about $1500 PLUS all the free weights that I used with the first set. The Chair cost about $400 and could go decline incline and it just Died. I am around 100Kg and then I was benching 100Kg as my warm up and the little bolts just fucking died.

Unless you're prepared to pay the cash, go to a real gym.

Hmm, so i went into Rebel sport today to have a quick look, turns out they didn't have any benches (which was a good thing i think).

Was browsing Gym Direct, what do people think of:

Bench Press

Seems good quality and a lighter/smaller version of the other. I'm short and light so i'm not to worried about 'killing it'. Also my home gym will be out side (under cover) so don't want it taking up a heap of room.

I won't skimp on a rack if i'm still keen in a month. Also on second thoughts i should of bought another barbell to since i'll be needing one anyway. Also about barbells, I got one of those $40/50 ones from K-mart/Big W ages ago, seems to be going strong. But will pick up another one once i have a bench.

Thanks again guys
