I am looking into buying some equipment for my own home gym that I would like to set up. I have been using local gyms for years and most of the equipment is Body Solid or Synergy.

I didn't find these brands to bad... I do want quality gear so happy to pay the $$$ none of this cheap flimsy crap.

I have even tossed the idea of making my own benches/racks up as I am a welder/boilermaker

What's your preference on brands?

If you can make your own, go for it.
I'd love the skill to be able to make my own but I don't have the skill now the patience.

Make your own, more satisfying and probably better than anything on the market anyway, especially with your skills, most stuff these days is imported and made out of pressed tin.

I am not really good enough to make my own and don't like pressed tin, so I bought second hand Aussie made Samson equipment, made out of BHP steel instead of pressed tin.:)

I did make a flat bench press when I was an apprentice.
I made it the right size so that it was easy for unracking and I had the padded bench to suit the width of my back. I hate my padded benches to wide.

I did use it quite a bit. I had even designed a spring loaded safety catch as I didn't have a spotter. If I was stuggling on the final rep I could flick my heel on to a lever which realesed would release the safety pins so I could drop the bar on to them.

I have some old Polaroids of it somewhere I will try find.
