Plate under heels for assistance in pushing through heels

No, you dont need lifting shoes for deadlifts. You dont necessarily need them for squats, but if your using plates to stand on, buy shoes.

Mark Rippetoe and Zach lift in old dress shoes

Rip is also a big fan of a small heel while deadlifting (smaller than a classic olympic heel) and says that the added quad drive outweighs the larger range of motion (don't forget the range of motion increased is that of the mid foot, not the heel) and there is no loss in posterior chain activation.

I however, hate it and deadlift in chucks

I DL in oly shoes, but only because my right oly shoe has been altered to add 1cm to the sole to account for the fact that I have uneven leg lengths.

Unless your an oly lifter, have injured glutes/hams or have ankle mobility issues, there is no reason for oly shoes.

I have always squatted in oly shoes since beginner. Cant even remember why I do it now. Possibly crossfit influence and doing lots of cleans.

I might try some flat foot squats and see if my mobility allows it.

And as for OP, at 6"6 im tall and think putting anything under my heels would set me back not make it easier.
