Strength & Conditioning for footballers

I honestly wish I had you as part of the coaching when I was playing rugby markos, that team is going to be unstoppable soon.

Not too sure about unstoppable, but I'd like to think they'll be stronger and get less OP,hamstring type injuries. The mental aspect is important to me.

Simon and I keep telling them no other VFL club is doing this in October, and I think he's correct. We had a Pt Melbourne player come round to sign up and he was blown away by the gym. He said, as Simon has stated before, we have the best gym in the VFL.

Geelong and Collingwoods VFL team train with their AFL team mates, I think, and they have tremendous no budget gyms.

Anyway, we keep telling the boys that NO club will be fitter and ready to go in the last quarter, they'll be able to overrun anyone.

Apparently last year they were killed in the second half in most games.

Simon is really impressed by their times already. One boy clocked just over 9 minutes for 3k. Most are posting up numbers much better than this time last year.

We have the same running coach as last year, a great guy, the only thing added has been the weights.

One of the great things has been the acceptance from the guys. You will always get soft cocks, but Simon is already cutting them. Anyone complains on the track, Simon sends them to me for a KB complex till theyre right again lol

A big Islander tonight was complaining about how hard the complex was

All this for 15 reps a set

Deadlift KB
64kg
56kg
48kg
40kg

Thrusters (near killed them)
16kg
12kg
10kg
8kg

Cannonballs
28kg
24kg
20kg

Then the same for 10 reps straight after. Thats 275 consecutive reps.

Anyway, the Islander had to do it with Nina and Sussi, he couldnt really quit.

Nina confided in me later on, it was the hardest complex she had ever done. She thinks I've broken her. Anyone thats done KB complexes with Nina knows how hard she goes, so this must have been really tough lol

One boy, Karnie, did it a third time with 5 reps, then went out and trained. Over 90% of these guys did it BEFORE training. The rest that get there late do it after.

Anyway Gary, here is a small video, ask and you shall recieve

Here's the issue with music.

People pay me to train them. If they cant hear my instructions, why pay.

During evening sessions with regulars who know what theyre doing, we crank up Black Sabbath, ACDC, Hip Hop.

I need to be mindful of who's in the gym.

Ladies groups during the day have music in the background so I cant hear them fart lol

The footballers that came in tonight did Judds and Tabata Ukrainian deadlifts.

They have the next 2 days off training, so it was an optional session, had around 10 guys lift.

Two of them did Judds with 60kg x 3. We didnt go any higher.

On the TUDL's, the winner managed 76 reps, second place was 75 reps.

How's that for a reward for coming in on a non training night.

Cannonball run for the players tonight.

64kg x 5
56kg x 6
48kg x 7
40kg x 8
32kg x 9
28kg x 10
24kg x 11
20kg x 12
16kg x 13
12kg x 14
10kg x 15
8kg x 16

They had to do it twice with little rest in between, thats 252 cannonballs.

Of course some players did it 3-4 times, twice before training and again after training.

I had around 15 players come in tonight for the optional strength session.

Two of the boys, Steve and Khan are addicted, never miss a session. Anyway, these two have the best powerclean technique.

After they finished their session, Max went over and trained with them, giving them tips. Steve is 90kg@6' and Khan is 98kg@6'5".

Steve managed 80kg in good form, he missed 85kg.

Khan and Max kept going, Khan managed 100kg and Max stopped at 110kg.

Neither Khan nor Steve had done cleans before they started with me.

In fact Khan had only done fluff. He has really taken to this. Tonight he squatted 100kg x 5 for 3 sets. He is simply going up 10kg each session. He is an incredible athlete who is an excellent runner as well. His squat is deep, he also benches 100kg.

Khan is of Maori descent, so we told him his lifts dont count as they have a genetic advantage.

He's the one that does my KB complexes a couple of times before training and a couple of times after. He cant get enough.

Later in the night Tommy was watching Harvey squat 137.5kg, he just shook his head, he cant believe that skinny Asian boy is that strong, Tommy complains about 60kg lol

Goosey has big plans for Khan, he told me to really work on making him really athletic, its why Max actually trained with him on cleans. Max really likes Khan, and Khan cant believe what Max lifts.

Theyre going to do lots of sessions together.

Tonight the boys did a Medley carrying the 7 kegs, it was a short sharp session with me, most got it done in 3 minutes, best being 2.29 and worst was 4.04.

There is a 15yo kid, Corey, he started about 6 weeks ago at PTC, plays football and does a heap of special one on one training.

Previous to PTC he had been clocked at 3.32 electronically for the 20m. This was the boy that Jesse raced and beat by 4m over 20m.

He got tested again on Friday, and in 6 weeks his time dropped to 3.18. His specialist coach is amazed. Corey and his dad are rapped.
