Someone might need to correct me, but I think if you are over 18 and you have sex with someone of the opposite sex under 18yrs (even if they are over 16 yrs - the age of consent) it is statutory rape.

Incorrect. Many people believe that this is true. I think it used to be but legislation was recently changed (at least in Victoria).
You can legally have sex with anyone over the age of 16 unless you have authority over them.
An example of authority would be if you are their school teacher, sports coach or a police officer etc. In that case they would have to be 18.
