U.S. Loses AAA Credit Rating as S&P Slams Debt, Politics

I agree. I'm certainly in no position to offer an in depth explanation, but I would say that it's a bit more complex than simply arguing that the crisis was caused by either too much or not enough regulation. Paul Krugman wrote some really great stuff about how that wasn't so much that...

U.S. Loses AAA Credit Rating as S&P Slams Debt, Politics

The problem with this argument that you're assuming that the government can reach and maintain this 'happy medium' of regulation. Attempting to regulate the finance sector to avoid crises is desirable, but in reality, it's probably unachievable. Alan Greenspan argued that trying to regulate...

    Stance when pressing

Thanks for your help everyone. I tried pressing outside the rack today and I found it much easier with a closer stance than the wide one I had been using. I'll try the seated press next time since so many have recommended it. Cheers.

    Stance when pressing

Sorry, I wasn't implying that pressing outside the rack was dangerous, but that moving around with that much weight was. As with the military press, I read somewhere that there were some fundamental differences between the exercises and that it was suitable for a beginner to press standing...

    Stance when pressing

I'm currently in the first month of Starting Strength and I have a question regarding my stance when pressing. You see, as I'm quite tall, when I press I sometimes hit the ceiling of my power rack, but I've found if a take a considerably wider stance I can avoid this. Would any problems arise...

    This steak tastes like $hit

I can see the labels on meat packaging ten years from now: "Meat may contain reconstituted faecal matter." DELICIOUS

What is the cheapest cut of meat? (leanish)

If you're looking for a cheap cut of cow, gravy beef seems to be the least expensive. You're looking at around $10 per kilogram depending on where you buy it. You'll have to deal with a fair bit of gristle, so you may have to slow cook it if you find that that's a problem.

Can someone explain some things about cottage cheese, casein and whey to me?

Okay, so if I'm looking for the most cost-effective option, then I should just get a casein supplement then? Is there some sort of consumption balance for which I should aim between casein powder and cottage cheese?

    Meal plan for starting out

I'm certainly no authority on nutrition (I have, at best, a rudimentary understanding of these things), but reading the section on nutrition on the Starting Strength Wiki served as a good starting point. There's a meal plan on there too.

Can someone explain some things about cottage cheese, casein and whey to me?

Okay, I've read up on the wonders of cottage cheese, but there are a few things I would like to clear up first. Please correct me if I'm wrong on anything: Cottage cheese is mostly casein and a small amount of whey. As such, a whey powder supplement is required. All of your casein needs...

    Squatting barefoot

Oh hey, What do you guys think of squatting barefoot? I haven't got any money for proper weightlifting shoes, and I've read about how lifting in runners can do more harm than good because they cushion your feet rather than allow them to gain a 'feel' for the floor. So would that mean that...

My setup with stuff mostly purchased from GymDirect.

Looks heaps sick, brah! HEAPS SICK! How's the flat bench? I'm planning on purchasing the same one.

Trouble keeping feet flat when squatting

The title is pretty much self-explanatory. I'm trying to include squats in my routine, but I'm having major issues keeping my feet flat on the ground and it puts major strain on my knees when going up. Is this a common problem with beginners and, more importantly, what can I do to fix it?

    Looking for a new bench

Hey, guys, I'm currently looking to buy a new bench to complete my gym setup at home (power rack, olympic bar and weights), but I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for in a bench. Should it be adjustable, so I can do incline and decline lifts, or should I just buy a flat one? Are...

Buying a new barbell as a beginner.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. My finances are a little tight at the moment so I went out and bought the barbell eaglebay suggested today from Gymdirect. It feels pretty solid and seems like it could take a battering. Of course, as soon as I save up enough cash, I will almost...

Buying a new barbell as a beginner.

Oh hey, I'm planning to start training seriously in the coming weeks after I buy some new equipment. Currently, I have a low-quality Kmart standard barbell with 'screw-on' ends (is that what it's called?) that doesn't quite fit in my new power rack. So, I'm looking at buying a new...
