This week in a special investigation, Catalyst explores the science behind the low carb diet. What are the health benefits and are there any risks? Is it suitable for everyone? Australian cricketer Shane Watson talks about how cutting carbs has helped him overcome his long-term struggle with weight. Recent research suggests it could improve the lives of people suffering from obesity and diabetes. Dr Maryanne Demasi asks international advocates, sports scientists and Australia’s leading nutritionists is it just another fad or is there more to cutting the carbs?

 
I am a big believer that for the large % of time you should eat a balanced diet of carbs, fats, proteins - fats and proteins are for me the most important and beneficial for a persons health and wellbeing - but still keep a balanced diet.

When it comes to dropping weight, getting in condition though I really don't think most people can go past a high fat/high protein diet!

From an energy source point of view then Fat is alot better and longer lasting than carbs will be - think of it like putting a log on the fire (Fat) or putting paper on the fire (Carbs) - yes sometimes it is good/needed to have those fast acting energy sources but overall your wanting long lasting/more health beneficial energy sources powering your body.

Everyone is different and everyone has there own ideas - of course High Fat dieting is a fad - because it is created to be a fad - but it does work - some people will do it and then change to another fad, some people will do it or use aspects of it for the long term/the rest of their life - like I believe I will.

It's only about 15 years late, but yes, it works a treat.

The most salient point mentioned on the program is there "there are no essential carbs". You can live your entire life healthy and strong with zero carbs. Not that you have to, but you can. Take out fat and/or protein and you will die.

In the bb/power community, we still have this shit advice that you need carbs to grow. Muscle is not made of carbs. Never has been never will. Carbs are just entertainment.
 
To anyone who enjoyed the newest Catalyst a reminder of their fantastic work on a similar topic from last year.
The newer more credible scientific data (ie studies not backed by big pharma or grain organisations) suggests homocysteine and visceral fat levels are the true indicators of poor cardiovascular health and not consumption of saturated fats or cholesterol levels as has been believed for the past 50 years. It seems increasingly likely that the inflammatory response from processed foods is what hurts us and blaming Cholesterol for all heart attacks is like blaming firemen for all fires, just because they are both at the scene of the crime doesn't imply they are responsible for the act.


ABC's Catalyst tacked this issue last year to scathing criticism and were subsequently pulled from the ABC's website due to concerns of bias. However upon reading the report the only element of both episodes (see below) they found to be unbalanced was in the second episode when they neglected to mention the benefit of statins to those who had already suffered a heart attack (called secondary prevention). Seems like a bit of an overreaction to pull both episodes right?
 
The biggest con in the food industry, in the 70's was the food pyramid, look at us now.

"Throwing out the baby again...rather than saying "low carb diet", carbs are evil, fat is evil, Protien is evil, we should be saying as in *everything* we do in our lives...having the fucking brains to be accountable and find what works for us, who gives a flying fuck what Shane Warne says.

Nothing succeeds like failure, in that what I do right (works) merely confirms my own beliefs.
 
very good and accurate story for once.

problem with the food pyramid is food is money, and money corrupts. even our education system is built on this corrupt system.
 
regardless of science, studies, proof etc, the fact is this diet has worked the best for me over the years, the biggest problem is getting it into your head that fats arent the enemy and you lose weight by eating fats and protein
 
I am trying to see wat happens wit more fats, but no matter what I do, I always seem to eat 50% carbs.

Being doing it so long, hard to change.

Having said that, when in my early 20s, I was much leaner, and eating a lot more fat in diet. 20+ pieces of Kentucky per day for a start.

Still, I find it hard to believe that any energy source is a bad culprit, as rugby said earlier a balance between three groups makes more sense.


After all, fat use takes a lot of our everyday moderate energy use, so no need to keep them really low.
 
I think for the general public, less carbs the better. I'm not saying to eat zero carbs, but look at the average person's diet. It's full of highly processed carbs, sugar, decent amount of fat and very little protein. Their macros are fucked lol.

The average person who sees their body as a magic black box when they put something in their face would benefit from a high fat, lower carb diet. Most people just graze or snack without much thought into preparing proper meals. If they ate more fatty snacks like nuts, they wouldn't have the cravings and would overall drop their daily caloric intake.

Yes, agree.

My only concern is cutting rice, pasta and bread. Never thought of these foods as detrimental, but I am cutting portions.

Lots of fruits and vegetables for the nutrients, lots of carbs for the energy to last all day.

Some protein in the form of meats, some dairy for the calcium, and only a little oil/sugar because of the high energy concentrations.

When i grew up me and the family ate along these same lines. But then we didn't make anyone rich because we made most of the food ourselves on the farm :)
 
Since when does the general public even remotely follow any type of diet or nutritional plan, even if it is a dodgy looking pyramid.

I think the problem is that most people put zero thought into what goes into their face, other than thinking like a child and grabbing the first thing that tastes sweet.
 
The pyramid was pushed heavily in the 70's to 80's in schools mainly, obesity was not an issue then, mainly cholesterol, which was connected with heart disease.
