Hi everybody just found this wonderful forum. Looking forward to reading through the threads and wish I had found it earlier.

Little history I'm late twenties male started working out about 9 months back(lost 9 kilos yay). Doing cardio, weights and ab exercises. Was going really well until I injured myself with a Inguinal hernia. Not sure exactly when it happened but one morning it was there. I've had the scans done and doctor is organising some specialists for surgery. He is indicating it could be about 6 months with a public hospital.

It's only being about 3 weeks so I've cut back to just cardio and jump rope. I've kept the diet the same doubled my cardio to take the ab/weights time I allocate daily but I've already put four kilos back on. I'm worried by the time I have surgery I would have fallen back into my old lazy habits. I just wanted to see if anyone had some exercises that you can still perform with a hernia? Or if anyone has had one what was their experience with working around it?

There's no reason you can't continue to lift weights with a hernia.
The only time you'll need to take a break is after surgery for a few weeks.

How big is the hernia, I've had a small one (5mm) for over a year and it doesn't effect my training in any way. Doc says its too small to worry about operating on right now and I can train as normal. What has your doctor actually advised about exercise? did you ask him ?

While you can continue to train normally without complication all hernia runs the risk of strangulation which can be life threatening. All be it rare and uncommon it is still a possibility and shouldn't be taken so lightly.

As with any medical condition consult your doctor and advice on what level of exercise he is happy with you doing with an untreated hernia.

I've had a hernia for 2 years or so, waiting on surgery now.
My surgeon has said it's fine to keep lifting until the surgery and mine is quite large now.

Darkoz if you don't mind me asking was the two year wait your decision or thats just how long it took the hospital to book you in.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The doctor noted it was small but told me not to do any exercise at all until we speak to the surgeon. I have done small weights my partners and apart from discomfort it was manageable but any core or sit up exercises its quite painful unfortunately.

I've been waiting for surgery just over a year now and saw the surgeon a month ago
I've had no issues lifting weights and have never had any pain from it, apart from the visible lump I only notice it when coughing or sneezing, no pain just can feel the movement.
