Casio G-Shock Watches

Young guy came into work today showing off his brand new Casio G Shock Watch that he had just bought for himself for for $500, me being a bit older was amazed at what he paid.

I never realised that these watches are now a 'prestige' watch that command that sort of money, a quick check on the net revaled some selling for over $2000

I remember buying these at the markets in Sydney, like Fairfield markets or Paddy's Markets for $6-15, I have not been to markets for probably a decade or more, so not sure if this is still the case.

I think I want one now

The ones from the markets for $10-20 are clearly fakes.

I used to have one 10 years ago and it cost about $200. Was a good watch, but was chunky as fuck and is a bit of a novelty. The only reason they would come back into style now would be the hipsters.

If you wanted something sturdy that told the time, get a heart rate monitor/fit bit. Far less bulky.
 
Yes plenty of people wear them everyone at my work does, apart from me at the moment and it's annoying, was wearing one till recently when the battery died, so need to change battery or buy new watch or may be both.

Some jobs don't allow mobile phone use (not my case) but I usually leave the phone in the car at work as I don't want to get it smashed or dropped in an irrigation channel or run over by something and a lot of places I work have no coverage anyway so pointless carrying it around.

Have just last night ordered an Otterbox Defender Case for my phone (old iPhone 4s) after getting the screen replaced for the second time on Wednesday, at $95 for a new screen I rather the protective case for $28 and a watch ion my wrist. Workmate smashed his new Samsung phone at work only last week as well, killed it and had to buy a brand new one at great expense.
 

No they were not fakes back then, that is how much they were, can't understand why they are so expensive now?? I have big wrists and most watches look too small, that is why I like something a bit more chunky.

I am 6'2" and 110kg, so I need a watch to match, looked at some watches and most look like girls watches when on my wrist.

Got a link to the ones you are talking about or some photos??

That is the exact one I am considering at the moment, but I want mine just plain black, can get one for $129, might just grab it, and see how it goes, I like the analog display with the digital date, that is programmed, my old Seiko watch needed the date adjusted at the end of almost every month which was a bit annoying

I was thinking the same thing about G-Shock and its cousin, the Baby-G. I couldn't believe they were over $100 when I saw them at the duty free store, thinking that it's there purely to scam Asian tourists just like shelves full of stuffed kangaroo dolls imported from China and painted boomerangs made of Viet balsa.

Then I noticed some of the ladies wearing Baby-G at the yoga class so I guess its not just the in-crowd sorority girls that wear these things. I haven't put a watch on in years but nearly got swept along with the tourist frenzy that day.
 
After some thought and further frustration at not having a working watch I ordered one of these yesterday.

Still can't believe that they are now a fashion statement, but I think I should be happy with it. and got it at a great price.



Now to wait for the postie to deliver it.

Also ordered a matching Otterbox case for my now antique iPhone 4s hopefully eliminating further smashed screens in the future.



So now I should be able to hang with the cool kids...

Geebus that looks about 3x as thick as my phone. I can't stand cases like that. Its like banging with two rubbers on
 

The otter cases are gold mate. Saved my phone many times over.

As you might have worked out from my posts, I work in a hostile environment, I am not into the latest gadgets or phones, I am happy to hang on to the one I have as long as it keeps working.

Currently I am on my third iPhone 4s screen and second backing case, the local Apple repair shop which is about 100km from me knows me by name and I am pretty sure I have financed part of his new swimming pool and home renovations with my screen replacements over the last few years.

So I figured it might be time for a decent protective case to put a stop to the destruction (I am probably a slow learner to only be doing this now), for $28 delivered it will be worth it I hope. I also quite like the tough paramilitary look of the case.

And in a pinch I might be able to throw the phone at someone in a self defence situation or use it as a weapon

And with the women out here I would be quite partial to use two rubbers, with a coat of tiger balm between rubbers so it gives you plenty of warning if one breaks

I phone does a lot more than a Nokia, takes better photos and Video's as well, I remember dropping my Nokia 55 metres onto hard ground (gravel driveway), and I thought that was the end of it, when I got back down I picked up the phone battery and cover up off the ground, put it back together and it kept working like nothing happened.

iphone falls 2 feet out of my car and needs a $95 screen replacement.
 
That's fair enough. Does it have anything on the actual screen? If not, I would look in to a tempered glass screen. If it lands on a rock or something face down, it will still crack the glass. A tempered screen will be like a sacrificial layer.
I still think iPhones crack way easier than any other phone. I drop mine on a regular basis, only ever put a 2cm crack in one of my screens, was hardly noticeable.
 

Yes the Otterbox has a protective screen, but the problem with the iPhone is if it lands on the edge the screen will crack, with these cases it protects the edges and even if it lands flat it will be protected. Can still crack, but a lot less likely, you can drop them plenty of times and they will be fine, it's just luck how it lands. With the case you can hopefully drop it more often.

Will see how it goes.

I quite like the solid look, but may change my mind once it arrives.

G-Shocks are good and tough as, only issue I have heard and seen a lot fail when time comes to changing the battery, not sure if it related to the people who do the battery change but it has happened to a lot of people I know. I have a Citizen dive style watch which I had for 20yrs, looks nice but a little tough at the same time, only thing is I have to get it pressure tested every time battery is changed, but small price to pay for it. Thought about getting a G-Shock as a work watch but my current one does the job nicely
