I do a bit of running on the treadmill , doing the couch to 5k program. I can't believe how running hurts your calf muscles , on the bike i can do 80k's with no hassles ok a bit of saddle soreness and legs , but the calves after rurnning cane

I used to be a state level long distance runner in high school, only took it up in recent years as my fitness returned. I can run a straight 4.7km without rest.
With powerlifting training I use it as my conditioning. The track around my town is 2.7kms. I have mapped my course to include all the hills which totals 3.5km.
On flat surfaces I walk, inclines are sprints, declines are jogs.
My average walking speed is 6.2km/hr, however my running average is 9.7km/hr :)

I walk/run in tonerwalkers (don't judge me!) But my sprint runs I use cross-style trainers.

Yay, the RUNNING THREAD!!!!!

I started out running to get some cardio fitness years ago and fell in love with it. Up until recently, I was running almost every day or every other day. For the last year or so, it was not so much to maintain cardio fitness but just because I enjoy it so much. I don't count it as a workout. It's just pure joy.

I don't run on treadmills anymore. I love to be outdoors, on the road or in parklands/trails.
I've suffered a few injuries over the years. The worst hit my ankle and hip. Still getting my left hip to be as stable/strong as my right and my ankle injury now means I can't squat to depth at all. But I'm working on it.

I haven't been running for about 4 months as my trainers call it "cardio" ;) and I'm not supposed to do much of it or  I will lose muscle mass and weight. OK so today I went for my first 30 mins outing ... won't kill me if it's once in a while.

Usually break up the runs as parklands have hills and a variety of terrain. Hill sprints mixed up with steady state pace runs but I sometimes just head out with the stop watch and time myself over distance.

My pace was around 10km in 60mins or a bit less. Faster over 5km. I'm probably a lot slower now.

2012 goal is to run barefoot by Xmas. I started running in minimal shoes with forefoot strike around Xmas last year and found it was a lot more natural for me and I suffered no calf pain or anything. Still no issues so hopefully on track.

Great idea, Kaz :D

Yay!

I'm against treadmill running, running is best kept out in the open, the fresh air serves the body well, plus I was never too trusting with treadmills, have seen too many accidents.

had a few close calls myself , the senses are all screwed up after coming off the treadmill , lose the balance and nearly trip over making a fool of myself in the gym

^^lol only one close call here where I accidentally pulled the stop cord at high speed.

These days you end up on you tube!

lol seriously? Disorientation? I've only had that once and only when I was dehydrated and should not have been running at all.

But agree that it's not healthy and it does not help you develop good running form. The only time I've found it to be useful was in doing my injury rehab so i could work slowly back up to running continuously and making sure I broke up intervals evenly and didn't get over zealous with speed etc.

I'm more of a sprinter. Have been doing longer runs lately though (around 3km) about once a week. I never used to like it, but I've been enjoying it lately.

I run, but in interval bursts, my body was not built for running long distances, but I'm excellanto at the sprints! lol

@BellaBaby75 Keep the sprints up Jo, the long distance will eventually come.

@Eman how do you fix shin splints?

These days I only run if something is chasing me. I was a distance runner at school and my advice is if you want to be a runner, don't stop. Regaining cardio vascular fitness hurts way more than weight training.

Stop running or push through the pain haha.

Long distance running just isn't for me. I'm more of a sprinter, so I enjoy sports like Oztag or league where I mainly play on the wing.

I thought I'd start running to increase my fitness since I hate treadmills so I went out an brought a pair of trail glove shoes now the last time I ran was in 2002 lol I strapped the shoes on and hit the road and by the time I hit the corner of my street I thought I was going to spew but I pushed through an I ran all the way to my folks motel about 5kms I was stoked with my effort until i woke up the next day fucking ouch it took 4 days before I could walk pain free . Baby steps for me from now on but I did like the feeling of being out alone running
